The 1 Minute AD Above Changed America ~ below
A HISTORY OF THE IDEA
In the 1950’s America began to have a serious problem with the littering. An ingenious campaign was developed to reverse the trend of careless littering. It was comprised of a multifaceted plan to utilize Education & Advertizing to get the message across that polution and littering reduce the quality of life are environmentally damaging and socially inconsiderate. An interesting aspect of the 1971 campaigns success was how it seriously affected the way young people viewed litter, pollution and their ability to make a difference. It is a fact that the habits of adults are very difficult to change but because young people so strongly agreed with the idea that we should not pollute the country they significantly influenced adults with bad littering habits to change their ways. By the early 1980’s it became socially shameful and completely taboo to litter. By the early 1990’s Recycling was common place and since the year 2000 the overwhelming majority of Americans are trying to become more and more “green”.
RELEVANCE TO INDONESIA
Part of American’s “littering problem” resulted from the vast increase of disposable items. The same factor is affecting Indonesia’s “littering problem”. In the past most manufactured goods were of high value and reused or at minimum recycled. Also most disposable items in Indonesia were completely natural and their disposal did not create environmental problems (ie. Banana leaves or brick and bamboo building materials). Today we are bombarded with a mass of cheap and disposable items that are often treated in ways that natural organic materials had been in the past. For whatever reason littering, pollution of lakes, rivers, beaches and the air we breath is a significant problem in Indonesia. This problem not only adversely affects our health and quality of life but is also has a direct economic effect.
SOLUTIONS
Indonesia is a great and beautiful, resourceful nation. Her people are friendly and creative and productive. But we need to admit when and where and how we fail. We need better practical as well as academic education systems. The "Keep Indonesia Beautiful" campaign is one way we can improve ourselves by looking at and facing how we are failing and more importantly how we can improve our behavior, our lives and indeed this great country. We Know pollution is not good for us, our community and the environment. To the extent that we can individually change our own habits and influence others to change theirs, We Must do it! Stopping Littering and Stopping the Burning which dumps previously unknown poisons into the air and on the earth and in the rivers is a clear way we can all help Make Indonesia More Beautiful. Lets Begin! Mulai!
A Nation Wide Competition for All Students in Grade Levels 1-12 that creates increased awareness of these issues is a good starting point. The "Make Indonesia More Beautiful" Competition will raise the awareness in the youth and their teachers and they intern will raise the awareness of elders as well as the generations that follow. Raised awareness produces better and more concious behavior. The process is not immediate but the payoff is grand and virtually guaranteed.
We Propose that this campaign is funded through donations from private companies and individuals.
These Sponsors will Gain Very Good P.R. and can engage with the program as a part of their social responsibility program. The Competition as designed, should cost less than 400,000,000 Rupiah (Rp. 100,000,000 in Prizes for students + less than Rp. 300,000,000 for additional and administrative costs). The Campaign should be able to raise far more than this amount which will be used to create a Non Profit Endowment Fund for use on and for future projects. The Keep America Beautiful organization was started in 1953 through individual and corporate funding and Indonesia Indah intends to build its non profit organization in the same way. - Tourism: Most of Indonesia is as Naturally and Culturally Beautiful as Bali BUT most of Indonesia is much more littered and polluted than Bali. This seemingly small difference is a huge difference when it comes to tourism. Tourists simply don’t want to go to “dirty” littered places with the smell of burning plastic in the air. When tourist do venture beyond Bali this is all too often what they find. When they return home this is what they report and the negative reputation of Indonesia as an unattractive country is compounded many fold. This is a hard reality to face but it is true and unless areas that hope to attract tourist clean up their environment they will not have thriving tourism. There are many case studies that can be sited where the people are not nearly as friendly or the culture as rich and diverse but because the landscape is warm and beautiful and relatively clean, tourism abounds.
- Productivity: Water pollution has a large effect on many areas because of the flooding it causes. This displaces people from their homes, slows and sometimes stops commerce causing untold loss of productivity and property damage. Water Pollution also damages the visual appearance of the countryside and beaches as well as polluting the fisheries and farmlands and drinking water.
- Health: Poor health and early death is probably the greatest and most violent yet silent effects created from environmental pollution in Indonesia. How many days are missed from work? How many people have died an early death from breathing noxious air or drinking polluted water for long periods of time? How many children’s mental development have been retarded for the same reasons? Indonesia’s greatest resource is undoubtedly her people. Industry is no doubt guilty of creating much pollution but so are individuals.
